Judd Gregg is a man of many beliefs but bi-partisan? (ah hem) He is all over the place and frankly his withdrawal as Commerce Secretary should  be seen for what it is, “a good thing”. Given the current economic crisis, Gregg who is ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, has missed 30 votes (49.2%) during the current Congress. Okay, whatever happened to giving your job a 100%? Gregg’s giving 50.8% in Congress what could we expect from him in Commerce?  I for one don’t want to know.

Another point to consider is, CNN sources say Gregg campaigned for the job with the assistance of Harry Reid.

A Democratic source close to the Obama White House said Thursday that Judd Gregg “campaigned for the job” — that the New Hampshire senator had asked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to approach the president about the Commerce post.

But now he can’t support the policies of the Obama Administration? What is up, really? Remember that Obama announced after Gregg accepted the nomination that the Bureau of Census would be transfered from Commerce to the White House and the plot thickens.  I believe HuffPo has a key to Gregg’s political closet.

He withdrew because control of the Census Bureau was withdrawn. His ploy, on behalf of the Republicans, was foiled. And, these pages began its unraveling.

Commerce had the Census Bureau. The Census will occur again in 2010. Republicans want control over the Census, and Gregg’s becoming Commerce Secretary would have provided that control. Historically, Republicans have improved their own legislative percentages after redistricting based upon census information.

So, Gregg is on record supporting Obama’s policies before he couldn’t support Obama’s policies. This is the mother of all political flip-flops and one comment Gregg  made regarding his withdrawal has left me puzzled, he said:

“I made a mistake. I should have focused sooner on the implications of my being in the cabinet versus … doing my own job.”

And that would be? Just wondering.
