Today is the Durham Earth Day Festival 2008, the event is presented by Keep Durham Beautiful and the City of Durham Parks and Recreation Department and WTVD ABC11.

This year’s theme is “It’s Easy Being Green”. The event will be held in Durham Central Park from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Earth Day festival goers will enjoy great music, food, participate in “green” activities and learn about the many solutions to environmental issues.

Festival highlights will include; electricity-free entertainment at the Eco Lounge and Zero-Waste Project for a Trash-free Festival, also opposition to the National Bio Agro Defense Facility will have a strong showing at this years festival. The Granville Non Action Violent Team (GNAT) will be handing out information relating to the environmental aspects of the NBAF’s placement in the Upper Neuse River Basin. With the facility being the size of 5 walmarts no doubt the carbon footprint will be a concern.

Also B.J. Lawson  will be holding a press conference, speaking out against the proposed biolab. A Republican, Lawson is a physician and medical-software entrepreneur. He is running in the May 6 primary against Augustus Cho of Chapel Hill, the winner to face Democratic incumbent David Price in the November general election. The conference will be at the Lawson for Congress table, and the setting has been chosen to emphasize the importance of local control and accountability in environmental protection.

We will of course be there with camera in hand so look for highlights of the event in the coming days.
